Gotta See It: Steve Vigar Designs
There has been one product of late that has been the conversation piece of the store, and
it's a product that you really have to see in person to truly appreciate it. It is a chess
set from Steve Vigar Designs. Mr. Vigar is an East Bay architecture hobbyist who has
designed pieces based on architectural treasures in New York, San Francisco, and Chicago.
The chess pieces designed and then laser cut from exotic woods prior to being carefully
put together by hand. The back row pieces each recreate an important part of the city’s
famous skyline, while individual pawns represent the varied residential architectural
styles. Architectural icons include the Empire State Building, Chrysler Building, Sears
Tower, and the Transamerica Tower. The San Francisco set also includes one of the
Embarcadero Center towers -- the same towers that house On The Fly's first store.
The board is comprised of zebra wood and whangee, and can include an optional drawer to
store the pieces.
In addition to the signature chess set, Mr. Vigar has also designed a cigar humidor based
on an Italian villa, jewel boxes inspired by Frank Lloyd Wright and Japanese temples, a
Castle jewelry box, and a watch box based on Grand Central Station. They are truly
stunning pieces of art sure to impress all who lay eyes on them. You can see the full
collection online here, but as the blog title suggests, it's really something you gotta
see in real life.
